Facing Alberta’s Welder Shortage

Greetings AWS Section Members and Friends,

Alberta is facing one of the largest Welder shortages in decades.
An unstable economy coupled with only seasonal work is one of the many
factors creating the looming welder shortage in Alberta. We will explore
some of the root causes as well as potential paths forward.

Mr. Sean Johnston, Senior Welding Examiner & Shop Manager at the UA Local 488 Weld Test Training Center.

As a member of the ACTIMS group (Alberta Council of Industry
Maintenance Stakeholders), Sean is actively involved in labour supply
issues as well as welder mobility throughout Canada. Sean is also an
executive of the Alberta Section of AWS and sits on AWOC (Alberta
Welder Optimization Committee) as well. Sean has 25 years experience in the heavy industrial and pipeline sectors.
