Design for Life: Solutions to Combat Wear
Tuesday, January 21st, 2020
Greetings AWS Section Members and Friends,
The Presentation
Wear is a perennial issue in oil sands, mining, and drilling applications, leading to costly equipment failures and lost production. This has led to the wide adoption of protective surfacing technologies to improve component durability and reliability.
This talk will give an overview of the options available for hardfacing, reviewing both the application processes and overlay types. This will include background information on the performance criteria requested in the current generation of qualification specifications. In addition, a review of new technologies, such as the 3D printing of large scale metallic components will also be presented. Dr. Fisher will present his work as manager of Materials group at InnoTech Alberta. Dr. Hamre will share his experience in the same field applying wear and corrosion resistant overlays using laser cladding technology.
The Speakers
Dr Gary Fisher is the manager of the ‘Engineered Materials & Advanced Processes’ group at InnoTech Alberta. He attended the University of Sheffield (UK) and received his PhD in 1998 from Cranfield University (UK) in Advanced Materials. His areas of expertise include wear and corrosion-resistant materials and protective coatings for aerospace, petrochemical, energy and mining applications.
Dr. Doug Hamre attended the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado where he received a Ph.D. in 2005 in the field of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. He joined Apollo-Clad in 2011 after working in the investment casting industry making Titanium and Superalloy components for the aerospace and power generation industries. Doug is a Professional Engineer in Alberta and currently the R&D Manager at Apollo-Clad Laser Cladding. .
