The University of Alberta AWS Student Chapter welcomes you to learn more about our Student Chapter, its members, and our efforts to live the mission of the American Welding Society: a nonprofit organization with a global mission to advance the science, technology and application of welding and allied joining and cutting processes, including brazing, soldering and thermal spraying. The AWS University of Alberta (UofA) AWS Student Chapter was established in 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining (CCWJ) to provide an opportunity for students to learn about and participate in the welding community. Since its inception, the student chapter has been actively organizing and hosting events including an annual seminar with world renowned speakers, open welding labs for the university, technical talks, CCWJ facility tours, and seminars. The growth and impact the chapter has had on welding in the province in such a short period of time has been extraordinary.
- To engage and bring more students in the field of welding
- To Connect Students and professionals in the welding industry
- To share academic knowledge valuable to professionals in the welding community
- To raise funds for academic travel activities
Over the academic year, the AWS student chapter is involved in various aspects of welding education. The CCWJ plays host to the Fundamentals of Welding course in the fall semester (September through December) at the University of Alberta, and the AWS student chapter is involved actively in aiding with all of the demos for the course.
One of the main aspects of welding education at a post-secondary level that the student chapter is heavily involved in is the mentoring and training of Dean’s Research Award recipients. This award is offered through the Faculty of Engineering and allows undergraduate students at the University of Alberta to complete research projects over the course of an academic year. The executive of the student chapter has played a major role in the mentoring of these students and three of four members of the executive committee for the student chapter are previous recipients of the award on multiple occasions.
The largest impact that the AWS student chapter has is through the hosting of hands-on Open Labs. These events are run entirely within the CCWJ by the student chapter executive and members. The Open Labs allow undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and staff at the university to try out welding in a comfortable and safe environment. This has allowed exposure to greater than 200 individuals to the joy of welding.

Welding for the Hydrogen Economy
Friday, April 28th – 8:30 AM MST
Online & In-Person @ University of Alberta
The Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining (CCWJ) proudly invites you to the 2023 edition of our Annual Seminar, which this year has the topic “Welding for the Hydrogen Economy: Experiences, Challenges, and Opportunities.”
The seminar is very timely: As the transition toward hydrogen utilization continues to gain momentum in Alberta and around the world, new opportunities emerge for industries locally and beyond to capitalize on this transition. This growing hydrogen industry creates an opportunity to use the skills already developed in the oil and gas industry.
On November 04, 2021, the Government of Alberta released an “Alberta Hydrogen Roadmap,” which strengthens its commitment to this emerging sector and reinforces its aim to decarbonize the industry and find synergies with existing expertise from other sectors. Alberta companies are actively building in this direction and targeting 300,000 tonnes of clean hydrogen production per year. ATCO, for instance, is involved in Canadian Pacific’s Hydrogen Locomotive Program, creating two zero-emission hydrogen train refueling stations.
This seminar features Bill Mohr (EWI), who will discuss the challenges of working with hydrogen blends in pipelines and failures in piping systems; Joshua James(EWI), who will present about unique environmental testing capabilities around qualifications and evaluation of materials for hydrogen service; Kelsey Coulter & Kalen Jensen (ATCO), who will provide an overview of the economics of hydrogen and their expertise in building infrastructure for hydrogen storage; and David Jordan (Lincoln Electric), who will speak about the role of hydrogen in the energy transition and potential welding solutions for pipeline and storage applications.
