Holiday Cheer with the Flaming Lotus Girls

Your Favorite Mavens of Lipstick and Accelerants are back with stories of their adventures at international art festivals, the SF waterfront, Burning Man, Maker Faire, the Smithsonian, and beyond. Please join us, and bring a friend, for festive atmosphere and casual discussion with the ladies, (and men) who represent a more spectacular side of steel fabrication. It’s our final meeting of 2018, so a few surprises from Santa’s helpers are on the agenda too.

The Flaming Lotus Girls are a volunteer-based group of artists who make large-scale kinetic fire and metal-arts projects. The group began in 2000, in San Francisco, California, as a group of six women and two men. It now includes over 100 members, over half of whom are women.

Recent projects include Noetica, a 25-foot tall hydraulically controlled sculpture made of 144 intersecting squares inspired by the interconnectedness of all humans in society, and Pulse, an anatomically-correct heart, beating fire through its four chambers to emulate the blood flow through the human heart, synchronized with the heartbeat of participants via biosensors. Fan favorites such as the Serpent Mother, a 168-foot snake of fire, and SOMA, translating the anatomy of neurons into metal, fire and light may also make appearances.

But one of the most vivid components of the Flaming Lotus Girls organization is their pioneering approach to participation. “Our vision is to empower people to develop fabrication and leadership skills, and to become experienced artists by fostering a supportive hands-on educational environment. We approach our collaborations through a unique design methodology with a hyper-fluid organizational structure. In our open and supportive cultural environment, FLG promotes creativity, education, volunteer contribution and leadership opportunities”
