Subject: “Hot Tapping” of a +700 psi natural gas pipeline to API 1104, Appendix B.
(API 2201, Procedures for Welding or Hot Tapping on Equipment in Service).

This presentation will review how API 1104 and Appendix B allows for the successful addition of a branch connection to a natural gas pipeline without removing the pipeline from service. Applied welding metallurgy, nondestructive testing, required PQR tests, and lessons learned will be presented. The use of buttering passes and Carbon Equivalent calculations made this a safe, successful project. In light of recent concerns over pipeline safety this branch connection had a lot of visibility and concern.

There will a brief discussion of non-Code weld repairs and failures that are current or notable examples.
