Event Summary: The Pittsburgh Section held its annual joint AWS/ASM meeting. During the meeting two presentations were shown. The first presentation was by Joshua Shuman in the Materials Science Engineering program at Carnegie Mellon University. His presentation was about the process of forging and included pictures of projects done at the forging facility provided by Rivers of Steel at the Carrie Blast Furnace National Historic Site.
The second presentation was by Chris Wilson the Global Director of Research and Development for NobleClad. The presentation showed the science behind the Explosion Welding Process (EXW). The process involves using controlled explosions to bond different metals into layered composites, creating cladded materials that offer enhanced corrosion resistance, strength and durability. The presentation highlighted the benefits, efficiencies and ability to clad incompatible materials.
