Recap: 10/14/2021 – Faircloth & Roberts Metallurgical Services: Facility Tour

October 14, 2021 – Faircloth & Roberts Metallurgical Services, LLC; 2508 Commercial Park Dr., Mobile, AL 36606

For our October meeting, Tomasz Andraka, Chairman of the AWS Mobile Section, opened up the meeting with an introduction, general announcement, and thank you to Faircloth and Roberts Metallurgical Services for both hosting the meeting and sponsoring the food.

Brandan Langlinais from Faircloth and Roberts Metallurgical Services gave everyone an excellent tour of their facility and understanding of their capabilities. The attendees were able to see the weld lab where both weld procedure qualifications and welder performance qualifications are performed. From there we proceeded to the destructive testing lab where live demonstrations were performed of guided bend tests, charpy v-notch tests, transverse tensile test, and all-weld metal tensile tests. At each test Brandan explained the importance of the test so everyone could understand what mechanical property was being evaluated. In the center of the lab, FRMS also had set up a large assortment of sample parts that were either sectioned for failure analysis or evaluated using various nondestructive testing methods including ultrasonic testing, liquid dye penetrant testing, and magnetic particle testing. The last part of the tour included a visit to their lab where they performed hardness tests, macro and microscopic evaluation, sample polishing, chemical analysis, and a view of their scanning electron microscope. Brandan wrapped up the tour with fielding questions from any of the attendees. Tomasz closed the meeting by thanking FRMS for the great tour and thanking everyone for attending.

A DeWalt toolbox and AWS logo koozies were given away as door prizes.

The Mobile Section utilizes Eventbrite for registration at monthly meetings. So far it has worked with limited success. Members and guest can pay for their meal online when registering for the meeting and it speeds up the registration process on-site. There were 31 in attendance at the meeting.

Tomasz Andraka, Mobile Section Chair, with presented FRMS with a plaque recognizing them on behalf of the section for their outstanding presentation and support of the Mobile Section.
