There was a great turnout of person attendees at the Holiday Inn Express located on Woodruff Road in Greenville South Carolina. We had 31 attendees in person and 2 virtual attendees.There was a strong representation from Greenville Technical College, Arclabs Welding School, Arcweld, Fluor, Euroweld, Lewis Reliability Resources, Applied Inspection Systems, Liburdi Dimetrics, Cianbro Corporation, TNT NDT Supply, multiple individual section members and guest.
We were honored to have Dale Flood (previous AWS President) and William Plumstead Sr., (recognized for his lifelong contributions to NDE) in attendance. The section would like to thank Zane Reed (Fluor Mechanical Department Manager) for supporting the event by sponsoring 11 early career engineers to attend the meeting. We appreciate Fluor’s continued support of the AWS Western Carolina Section.
The meeting started with a slide presentation from AWS Western Carolina Section 195 chair, Wayland May who presented the current section demographics, tentative 2022/2023 schedule, current officers and requested input from the section.
Bill Newell, AWS 2023 Board of Directors, Director at Large presented an update on Recent AWS Conferences and provided section activities and demographics.
Gary Cannell, Fluor Technical Senior Fellow, presented A New Technology for Fuel Pool Liner Welding. The talk reviewed the shortage of welders / welding operators in industry, its impact and how industry can address the issue: Better recruitment and technology. Will also review development of an emerging technology and its application to highly critical welding applications.

Our next meeting will be a joint meeting with ASNT on October 18 at 6 PM at Arclabs Welding School in Piedmont, SC. Please watch for a meeting invite to be posted in the next few days.
