DESCRIPTION
Bill Wahmuth,
CWI, ASNT Level III Inspector
ABW Technologies

Fabrication and Inspection

Bill started welding right out of high school. He welded steel pots that went into a furnace, and he also operated a heat treating furnace, treating an assortment of metal parts. In 1971 He got a job with the largest diving company in the world, Taylor Diving & Salvage in Louisiana. Bill spent the next 12 years working all over the world. In the beginning, he specialized in underwater burning. In 1976 Bill got involved in hyperbaric welding and saturation diving, where 9 men would live in an 8 foot diameter, 30 foot long chamber, pressurized to the bottom depth for sometimes months at a time. They welded pipe up to 36” diameter in a habitat pumped dry so they could make X-ray quality welds. They wereall Level I’s in X-ray and MT. After taking shots of the welds the film was sent to the surface in a paint pot to be examined by a Level HEI X-ray technician.

In 1985 Bill worked for the College of Oceaneering in Wilmington, Calif. teaching physics, physiology, dive medicine, rigging and underwater welding. At this time he pursued a CWI certification so he could write welding procedures and certify the students. After moving from California to Everett, Washington in 1988 Bill started working at Divers Institute of Technology. After a year he went to work with his current employer, ABW Technologies as a Foreman. Having a CWI nudged him into the quality control end of the business. Since then Bill has pursued a number of certifications, eventually becoming supervisor of the QC department. In 1994 he started doing leak testing as a Level II and got a Level III in 2004. Bill has been involved in AWS since 1987 and ASNT since 2004.
