The Pittsburgh AWS Section is proud to present a full line up of plant tours and technical presentations for its members for the 2018 − 2019 year.

I hope that you will find one of the meetings we have scheduled of interest and plan to attend. If you have any ideas for our chapter or suggestions for a future meeting or plant tour, please contact any of our Board members.

Note that we have begun using “Eventbrite” to make and pay for meeting reservations. There will be a pricing discount if paid in advance through this system (see below). I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thank you,
Ray Knobbs – Chairman, Pittsburgh AWS

Past Chairman’s Night – Tuesday, January 15th, 2019
Title: Welding Lessons Learned from 50 Years of Weldment Failure Experience
Speakers: Dr. William O’Donnell, PhD, PE
and Bill O’Donnell, BSME, MA

Dr. William O’Donnell, PhD, PE – founder and President of O’Donnell Consulting Engineers, Inc., Bill began his professional career at Westinghouse Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, where he helped develop components for the nuclear Navy under Admiral Rickover. He has extensive professional experience in the analysis of components including fatigue and fracture safety evaluations and failure analysis. He has developed methods for evaluating fatigue, stress corrosion cracking and safety margins of components, and is an expert in complex failure modes which occur under cyclic loads.

For over 12 years, he was the Chairman of the Subgroup of Fatigue Strength of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The Pittsburgh Section of the ASME named him “Engineer of the Year” in 1988, and he is listed in the Engineers Joint Council “Engineers of Distinction” and Marquis “Who’s Who in the World”. See a List of Publications by him and other members of our team.

Bill O’Donnell, BSME, MA – Bill has a BSME from Rochester Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering and an MA in Communications from Carnegie Mellon University.

He has more than 20 years engineering experience, which includes supporting the Materials Research Division at Argonne National Laboratory, performing research, and developing material test protocols for submarine propulsion. See additional information.

This presentation and the related “Handbook of Lessons Learned” summarize the most common welding mistakes responsible for weldment failures that have occurred over the past 50 years. These lessons are based on failure causation analyses and litigation of weld failures. Finite element mathematical simulations have been found to be quite useful in evaluating weld structural integrity including fatigue, and the fitness-for-service of defective welds.
