Technical Meeting – Thursday, November 1st, 2018
Title: 2016 Liberty Bridge Repairs
Speakers: Nick Burdette and Ralph Croushore
On September 2, 2016 the Liberty Bridge was closed for 24 days, following a fire during construction work on the bridge. Intense heat from burning plastic piping had caused a 30 ft (9 m) steel beam (compression chord) to buckle.
Nick Burdette, P.E. of HDR Engineering will discuss design challenges to facilitate repairs to the structure. A native of Philadelphia, Senior Bridge Engineer Nick Burdette entered the industry in the United Kingdom before coming to Pittsburgh 10 years ago. He has deployed accelerated bridge construction techniques on a wide range of structural components — some very large — for a variety of notable bridges. Among them are the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo (New NY) Bridge in New York, and the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge replacement in Outer Banks, North Carolina.
Ralph “Bucky” Croushore joined Amelie Construction in February 2018 as their General Manager for Commercial Steel. Previously, he worked for Abate-Irwin as their Project Manager/Superintendent where he spent 27 years managing all aspects of bridge and steel projects. Notably, Bucky managed the construction of over 40 bridges including the repairs to the Liberty Bridge after the fire, structural rehabilitation of the Aliquippa Bridge, and 9 bridges for the PA Turnpike Commission of which 7 were dual-span. Bucky holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
