The Pittsburgh AWS Section is proud to present a full line up of plant tours and technical presentations for its members for the 2018–2019 year. The calendar on our web page www.awssection.org/pittsburgh/ lists our current schedule.

I hope that you will find one of the meetings we have scheduled of interest and plan to attend. If you have any ideas for our chapter or suggestions for a future meeting or plant tour please contact any of our Board members.

Note that we have begun using “Eventbrite” to make and pay for meeting reservations.  There will be a pricing discount if paid in advance through this system (see below).  I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Also, congratulations to Dave McQuaid for his nomination to the 2018 Class of AWS Counselors.  He will be inducted during the Annual Business meeting held in conjunction with the 2018 FABTECH.

Thank you,
Ray Knobbs – Chairman, Pittsburgh AWS

Joint ASM Meeting – Thursday, September 20th, 2018
Title: Maintenance Aboard the International Space Station
Speaker: Michelle Fitzgerald, NASA

Michelle Fitzgerald is a flight controller and instructor at Johnson Space Center with over 15 years’ experience certifying flight controllers and astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) Mechanisms and Maintenance. She has supported the assembly and operations of ISS over numerous expeditions, shuttle flights, and visiting vehicles. Michelle earned a B.S.E. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan and loves Star Wars, reading, and Girl Scouts, and helping to keep the Space Station flying.

Maintaining a home and lab are challenging; when it’s also an orbiting platform you need to get creative!  Imagine doing a home improvement project without access to Home Depot. Keeping a space station flying sometimes requires inventive tricks and fixes using the materials available; a flight controller responsible for maintenance and mechanisms from Houston’s Mission Control presents some of the more interesting ways the crew has maintained habitability and functionality aboard the ISS.
