?In-Person & Online: Nashville Section Technical Meeting – 3/20/2025

This will be a hybrid meeting (In-Person at TCAT Nashville and Online via Zoom), with guest speaker Dr. Joshua Burgess. TVA Sr. Program Manager. At the American Welding Society (AWS) Dr. Burgess serves as Vice President and will be the 2026 AWS President.

Presentation Topic: Failures in the Power Industry and Case Studies. 
The presentation will highlight a number of case studies and failure analysis observed in the Power Industry.  Metallurgy, welding, and material properties will be discussed to provide an overview of how and why the issues occurred.  

There will be a social hour and dinner beginning at 5:00 PM, with the meeting beginning at 6:00 PM.

Speaker Bio

Joshua Burgess
Metallurgical / Welding Engineer

Dr. Burgess has over 23 years of experience in the welding and metallurgical industry. He holds an AWS CWI certification and AWS Level III Expert Welder certification and previously served as a welding instructor for a technical college and has years of industrial welding experience. His previous technical research experience includes weld deposit solidification studies on high-entropy alloys, carbide identification and precipitation in Cr-Mo steels and creep behavior of high strength steels.

At Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Dr. Burgess is a Sr. Program Manager and responsible for welding activities, metallurgical assessments, and select inspection programs across TVA’s Generation Services fleet.

At the American Welding Society (AWS) Dr. Burgess serves as Vice President and will be the 2026 AWS President.

Dr. Burgess received his BS in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2009. He earned his MS and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering with a concentration in Welding Metallurgy from the University of Tennessee in 2011 and 2014, respectfully.
