The Mobile Section January meeting was hosted by Bishop State Community College. Tomasz Andraka, Mobile Section Chairman, opened up the meeting with a few announcements and then introduced Clay Byron, the Mobile Section Scholarship Chairman. Clay gave a brief presentation on the use of the AWS Scholarship portal and how to apply for scholarships.Following Clay’s presentation attendees toured the welding facility and training lab on the campus of Bishop State. Once the tour was complete, the guest speaker for the evening, Ryan O’Dell of Miller Electric was introduced. Ryan addressed attendees on the importance and availability of new innovative training solutions that can help transform a classroom so students are able to quickly build the skills and confidence they need before stepping into a welding booth.There were 21 attendees at the meeting, including four students from local high schools. It was the sections intentions to hold a virtual welding system competition for students to get the opportunity to compete for prizes, but with Covid on the rise again, we felt it was in the best interest of the students not to have the hands-on competition. Instead, all four students in attendance received a Jackson welding helmet provided by Jackson Products and the AWS Foundation.A door prize drawing was held and Terry Moore, an instructor at Bishop State, was the winner of welding helmet provided by Miller Electric.A special thanks goes to Miller Electric for sponsoring the meeting and to Bishop State Community College for hosting.
