Recap: 54th Annual Lehigh Valley AWS Student Welding Competition

Location: Lehigh Career & Technical Institute, Schnecksville PA

Number of Attendees: 16 Students, 5 Judges, 8 Instructors and 4 Admin

Event Summary: 16 students from 8 Career & Tech Ed Institutes participated in the 54th Annual AWS Student Welding Competition. The students were tasked with making several different projects. One project was a pressure vessel with a through plate. The project consisted of SMAW, GMAW, GTAW (stainless to carbon) and OFC. The students also had to complete a OFC project that consisted of washing/gouging a welded pipe from the center, creating a bevel in a hard to reach area, as well as making several shapes and corner to corner cuts. The additional OFC project was the states Keystone which awards the winner a cutting outfit. The last project was an “AWS” aluminum sign consisting of staggered fillet welds which the students were able to keep. The competition ran from 8:30AM to 3:30PM with a working lunch. Hats off to all the student competitors in this challenging competition!!!
