Albert Moore, President of Owner of Marion Testing & Inspection, AWS Senior Certified Welding Inspector, ASNT NDT Level III and frequent contributor to Inspection Trends, will be discuss welding of Stainless Steel will present “How to Weld That Shiny Stuff Called Stainless“.

Overview: Do you know what you are getting into when you choose to weld stainless steel? There are number of “old wives’ tails” associated with stainless steel. They can get both the designer and the welder into more trouble than they bargained for.

Stainless steel is a high alloy steel and like carbon steels, there are several families, each with specific characteristics, weldability, and idiosyncrasies that need to be considered when welding them. What are the different families of stainless steel and what do we need to know to weld them properly?

This evening you will learn the difference between five families of stainless steel. You will learn why small amounts of ferrite are important when welding certain types of stainless steel. You will learn why it is important to limit interpass temperature when welding certain stainless steels. You will learn how to select the correct filler metal using the WRC diagram. You will learn what stainless steels need to be preheated before welding and what stainless steel can be welded without preheat.
