Event Summary: NORFOLK SOUTHERN hosted a technical meeting and facility tour for our ATLANTA section members. John DEATON (cwi) and welding manager discussed the procedures of obtaining certifications. John discussed the different welding techniques when repairing rail and rail components, bridges, roadway equipment, freight cars, and locomotives. John elaborated on the various processes which include SMAW, FCAW, THERMITE, and FLASH BUTT welding and how welding is essential in maintaining infrastructure and equipment on a daily basis. John also discussed their accredited test facility at NORFOLK SOUTHERN TESTING FACILITY. NSTC provides testing in Georgia and Tennessee for individuals, businesses, technical colleges, high schools, correction facilities and non-profit organizations. The training facility became an ATF in 2004. A tour of the training and welding lab was held after the meeting.
