🌟 Exciting Events Ahead with AWS Southwest Virginia Section!

Upcoming Events

Hello! My name is William Daniel Shinault, and I wanted to introduce myself to the section as the newly appointed section Chair, as well as provide an update about what we are working on in the section.

  • First, we will be having a welding camera demo hosted by B.T.E.C. on October 16thΒ at 5:30PM. The product demonstration will be of a Cavitar welding camera with instruction from Brad Charles.
  • Next, we have a weld-off scheduled for November 6thΒ at William Fleming DAYTEC where 2 students per school will compete in the welding processes SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW. The grand prize for this event will be a scholarship awarded to the winner by the AWS.
  • Last but certainly not least we have the 2026 Sculptured Art Contest scheduled for April 25th, 2026, hosted at Lift-Arc Studios in Roanoke, VA. We will have a student exhibit and an β€œopen” exhibit for anyone else who would like to enter. There will be a 1st-3rdΒ prize for each exhibit based on set criteria and decided by a panel of 3 judges.

Another event worth noting is a CWI competition that will be held at the 2025 ASNT Conference. This event will be held at Disney Coronado Springs Resort from October 7 through October 8. The competition will be questions based on general welding knowledge and a visual examination of weld samples.  There will be prizes for the 1st and 2nd place.  Please direct any questions or participants to kholbert@aws.org

Students! You can join the American Welding Society for free! You can enjoy 4 years of membership at no cost while you pursue your education. Take advantage of this opportunity. We have a lot of exciting things happening with a lot of our energy being focused on our youth. Last year the AWS estimated a deficit of over 400,000 skilled welders needed to meet demand into 2025. It is important, more now than ever, to cultivate the next generation of welders and to help them find their way into the workforce. We hope to see you out there!
