Date of Event: 04/23/2025

Location: McFatter Technical College

Number of Attendees: 15

Presenter/Notable Guest(s): Welding Specialist Brent Williams, “Welding Military Grade Armor”

Event Summary: The American Welding Society South Florida Section recently enjoyed meeting at McFatter Technical College in Davie, Fla.

Brent Williams presented on welding military grade armor and considerations for the next generation of ground combat vehicles. He reviewed vehicle classifications, next-generation requirements, modern armor materials, material considerations, common discontinuities, and best practices for welding. At the end of the talk, he pointed out next-generation materials increase welding challenges, but best practices can reduce the change for discontinuities and following approved procedures increases success.

Afterward, participants gathered in the school’s welding lab to watch Williams demonstrate gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Much thanks to South Florida Section Chair Gilly Burrion, Otto Burrion, McFatter Welding Instructor James Scott, and the welding students for participating.

After the presentation by Williams, AWS South FL Section meeting participants posed for a group picture.
