Please join us for a long anticipated SF Section in-person meetup. In honor of previous AWS President Dennis Eck, who championed the next generation of welders, we are focusing on the theme of Welding Education in the 21st Century.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Along with featured\u00a0speaker Benjamin Carpenter, the Welding Department head at Kennedy High School in Richmond, CA, we will have time for socializing and a tour of the Welding Lab at Chabot College.\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Guest Speaker Benjamin Carpenter is the Welding Department Head at Kennedy High School in Richmond CA. He took the position in 2019, picking up the torch of beloved longtime Instructor and AWS Member Cleve Harris, who passed away suddenly. Resurrecting the program was no easy feat, but the school was determined to find the right person to address the welding labor shortage and provide pathways to employment to the students of South Richmond. Kennedy High School has a strong history of innovative project-based and career education, and Ben rose to the challenge, earning the 2021 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence, winning $35,000 for his program, and $15,000 for himself. But teaching in the era of smartphones and social media, not to mention social unrest, provides issues that traditional vocational education never had to contend with. Ben will discuss the challenges and the triumphs that shape Welding Education today, and what to expect when preparing to hire them.<\/p>

Ben’s shift to full-time teaching came after an eighteen-year stint as an architectural fabricator, where he worked on everything from mansions to fishing boats. He is one of the founding members of the Five Ton Crane collaborative arts group, producing major sculptural works installed nationwide. For many years at the Crucible in Oakland, he taught blacksmithing, was the Welding Department Head, and served as Mentor for their innovative youth apprenticeship program. He spends his free time… who are we kidding, he doesn’t have any free time.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/div><\/div><\/div>
