Event Summary: The American Welding Society San Francisco Section and Faculty from Chabot and Laney Colleges were proud to collaborate in presenting our annual Welding Competition. Ninety students from from six local schools contended in three categories for prizes donated by Dean McWilliams of Airgas San Leandro and AWS Scholarships from AWS District 22 Director Randy Emery. The Chabot College Welding team took 8 out of 14 available awards and two of three first place awards along with a $1,000 scholarship for each. While judges scored the weld samples, University of California Nuclear Engineering Professor Peter Hosemann gave a presentation on metallurgy and the AWS San Francisco Section provided a catered lunch. The event was a great success and we look forward to building upon our collaboration next year. Thanks to Laney College Welding Faculty members Javier Valencia and Richard Hashimoto, staff James Madison, and the Laney Student Welding Club for hosting and to Airgas, ALCO Metals, and AWS District 22 for their generous support.
