Failures at welded joints may occur for myriad reasons, and metallurgical failure analysis can be an important tool both for understanding failures and for preventing future failures. This talk will discuss techniques for metallurgical evaluation of welds, with a particular focus on failure analysis investigation. Case studies of failure analysis investigations involving welded joints will be presented. A tour of the MEE laboratory will be conducted.<\/p>

Dan Grice is a Senior Materials Engineer\u00a0at Materials Evaluation and Engineering. Dan obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2009, and is a registered Professional Engineer in multiple states. His work focuses on failure analysis, materials characterization, product evaluation, research and development, and expert witness testimony. He examines failures in metallic and nonmetallic materials by fracture, wear, corrosion, thermal damage, or other degradation.<\/p>

Dan has been an active volunteer with ASM International since 2006 through Material Advantage, Twin Tier Chapter, Minnesota Chapter, the Emerging Professionals\u2019 Committee, and the Failure Analysis Society. He was recognized with the ASM Bronze Medal Award in 2020 and with Early Career Achievement Award from the UW-Madison College of Engineering in 2021.<\/p>
