Repair of the US Capitol Dome Presentation<\/strong>

The United States Capitol dome is the dome situated above the United States Capitol which reaches upwards to 288 feet (88 m) in height and 96 feet (29 m) in diameter. The dome was designed by Thomas U. Walter, the fourth Architect of the Capitol, and constructed at a cost of about $1 million (equivalent to $14.5 million in 2018). Over the years, the dome material has cracked, requiring structural repairs. This presentation is the story of the development of a repair procedure for the dome.<\/p>

Dr. Tom Siewert is a widely-known leader in the fields of structural materials, welding, materials reliability, and non-destructive evaluation. After earning his PhD from The University of Wisconsin (Madison) in 1976, Dr. Siewert was manager of welding filler metal R&D for Alloy Rods (now ESAB). From 1984 to 2010, he was employed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a leader in the fields of structural materials and welding. In 2002, Dr. Siewert was part of the NIST team responsible for investigating the possible modes of failure involved in the WTC collapse.<\/p>
