Event Summary: Ten Scouts from the Katy, Texas area attended a Welding Merit Badge workshop hosted by Bechtel’s Welding and Applied Technology Center in Houston, Texas. Scouts began in the classroom learning welding safety, arc welding fundamentals, and applications. They then spent a few hours learning Shielded Metal Arc Welding utilizing E6013 electrodes and completing a welded project of either a model airplane or flying eagle. Scouts were provided with materials for welding fillet, groove welds, welding their initials. The workshop finalized with barbeque lunch and learning about careers in welding from field execution, project planning, digital automation in weld tracking and monitoring, materials applications and research and development. Resources for continued learning from the AWS were provided for their continued education goals and planning.
