Importance of Welding for Power Utilities:
Abstract: The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) supplies power to over 10 million customers, relying on welding as a critical process for maintaining existing infrastructure and developing future assets. TVA’s welding applications range from traditional SMAW repairs on boiler tubes to cutting-edge wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). Advancements in welding technology have significantly enhanced both repair methods and manufacturing efficiency. In response to growing supply chain challenges, TVA and other Utilities are increasingly exploring innovative solutions, including advanced additive manufacturing. With wait times for conventional castings on the rise, additive processes are becoming a more viable and attractive alternative. This presentation will highlight common welding challenges in the Utility Industry and explore how the American Welding Society (AWS) and emerging welding technologies are shaping the future.
