Event Summary: 26 Scouts from the Dayton area attended a Welding Merit Badge workshop on Saturday, March 22. The event was co-hosted by AWS Dayton Section and Hobart Institute of Welding Technology. Scouts started the morning by learning welding safety, followed by welding fundamentals. After classroom time, scouts were split into 2 groups for the hands-on portion of the workshop. Both stations consisted of a cutting process demo (oxy-fuel and plasma) and hands on welding process (SMAW and GMAW). During the lab time, scouts were given material to tack and weld together multiple joints. After completion of welding their coupons, the scouts were given a small geometry to weld and take home with them. The workshop ended back in the classroom where the scouts learned about career opportunities in the welding industry and AWS involvement in welding. On Sunday, we held our Court of Honor awards ceremony. All the Scouts that attended commented that this merit badge was in the top 3 of the merit badges that they earned. Overall, it has been one of the best experiences that many of these Scouts have participated in.
