Joint ASNT / AWS Meeting: Welding Steels We Would Rather Avoid

Join us on Wednesday, March 11 from 5:30PM to 8:30PM for a presentation by Albert Moore Jr. on the subject of a complex welded repair.

As the title suggests, this is a “How We Did It” presentation of the welded repair of 3800-pound 4140 alloy steel forging that failed in service. This alloy is considered to be one of those steels’ welders would rather avoid. Some people would tell you that the forging was a throw away because of the difficulty of welding this steel. What was involved? Well, hopefully that’s why you will make it a point to attend this informative presentation. As a teaser I will tell you the repair involved high preheat, in-process thermal stress relief, ultrasonic testing, and patience, plenty of the latter.

The presenter will be the past Chairperson of the Connecticut Section AWS: Albert Moore Jr. He is a Life Member of both ASNT and AWS and was the first recipient of AWS’ CWI Lifetime Achievement Award. He is an AWS Senior CWI, certified as a Level III in several test methods, and he is certified by ASNT as a NDT Examiner under the auspices of the Shipbuilders NDT Program. He is the owner of NAVSEA Solutions, an adjunct Instructor for ASME and provides Level III and NDT Examiner services to client companies.
