Houston AWS Meeting

November Meeting is Student Night!

We highly encourage everyone to attend this month's Houston meeting, not only is the topic very interesting, and great food, but every student that attends will receive a free nice gift as well. November is also Awards Night. For those who received the Dr. Morgan Scholarship, Dr. Morgan should be attending and it would be nice for him to meet the students who were awarded scholarships in his name.

November 19th trip to Houston AWS Meeting

It's great food, interesting information, and a great way to interact with people in the industry. (Can you say internships & jobs? ;-) )

SPEAKER:  Dan Allford, ARC Specialties Inc.

TOPIC: Hot Wire TIG and Plasma Welding

Joining and overlaying applications of hot wire TIG (GTAW-HW) and plasma (PTAW) welding.  These two processes are underutilized due to a general lack of familiarity.  Properly applied these processes can solve welding problems which MIG, cold wire Tig, and Sub arc cannot.  Dan Allford will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both processes.  The talk will include an explanation of how hot wire Tig and Plasma Welding works and the equipment needed.  Using examples of real world projects, Dan will explain why the hot wire Tig, or plasma was selected over more conventional processes.  Examples include hot wire Tig welding of Inconel® for corrosion prevention, key hole plasma welding of titanium, powder fed plasma welding of Stellite® for metal to metal wear, and powder fed plasma welding of tungsten carbide for metal to rock abrasion resistance.

Dan Allford is the president of ARC Specialties, a Houston company specializing in welding automation.  Dan is a graduate of the University of Houston, with 24 years experience ranging from plasma welding cobalt alloys in Russia to buried arc welding of aluminum armor plate.
