AWS Scholarship

EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS

How often have you heard that phrase? In this one case it relates to money and education. With technology changing rapidly in the welding industry, like Robotics, Lasers, and automatics, sometimes it may seem tough to keep yourself marketable or in a position to advance personally and monetarily. Without the education or training in the new technologies you may find yourself stagnating in the same boring job with no future.

Every year the AWS gives each district five thousand dollars to give away to students in the form of scholarships. This money is either for yourself, spouse or children to use, all you have to do is fill out an AWS scholarship form and submit it by March 1st along with any other paper work that is requested on the form.

It is important that you make sure the application is:

1. Complete, neat, and with no misspelled words.

2. Financial aid statement.

3. Transcripts- Official school transcripts showing high school, trade school, or community college.

4. Personal Statement - Ambitions, goals, background, and other factors that will help the selection committee decide who will receive the scholarships.

5. Biography & Photo - Submit a photo of yourself and a brief biography.

The four items listed need to be sent along with the application. If you would like, contact Ted Alberts at New River Community College phone: (540) 674-3600, ext.4314 or by E-Mail: nralbet@nr.edu , He will send you samples of a good personal statement, plus a sample biography.

The scholarship awards are decided on and divided up at our District Council meeting in May. I have been involved in this selection process for the past few years and to my surprise there are very few applicants. Along with the District scholarships there are National scholarships given out, these require a separate application. The money is there for the taking, you might not get a large amount but "every little bit helps".
