Chairman' Message
Greetings,
I would like to start this months chairman’s message with a thank you to Dan Roskeiwich for putting together the student welding competition. He and the other instructors did a great job as usual. The welds that I saw turned in will result in some well paying jobs after graduation. First place in the competition was earned by Matt Degeralamo from GCIT. He opted to take Lincolns offer of a trip to their home office and attend their welding school for one week.
At our last meeting Robert Murray from the diver’s academy discussed how commercial diving offers a career of excitement, adventure, rapid advancement, and variety. Dan Roskeiwich has been in contact with Tammy Brown of Divers academy to have our student night at their new school in Sicklerville.
I would like to remind you that our next meeting is being held at Villari’s Lakeside Inn
2375 Sicklerville Rd Gloucester Township, NJ 08081
Respectfully
Gary Atherton

We Hope that you find this electronic newsletter to be an added benefit to your membership to the American Welding society as well as to provide some tools that you can use on a daily basis.
The American Welding Society (AWS) was founded in 1919 as a multifaceted, nonprofit organization with a goal to advance the science, technology and application of welding and related joining disciplines.
The careers that stem from welding as well as the projected shortages of welders in the near future provide a wonderful forum to give back to an art and trade that we all have benefited from.

EDUCATION CORNER
Twenty-one students representing 8 schools from South Jersey participated in the annual Section student welding contest. The schools and respective instructors in attendance are as follows:
Gloucester County Institute of Technology; Dan Roskiewich
Camden County Gloucester Township Campus; Jim Rynex
Camden County Pennsgrove Campus; Rick Zadroga
Cumberland County Technical Education Center; Doug Bonner
Salem County Vocational Technical; Mel McCullum
Burlington County Institute of Technology; Jack McDade and Jay Lloyd
North Montco Career Technical Center Rich Schmidt
Although all of the students were winners, the top three finishers and their respective schools were:
First: Matthew DeGeralamo, GCIT
Second: Justin Wigglesworth, Cumberland County
Third: Anu Abdul-Whid, GCIT
The generous table full of prizes were donated by Diamond Tool (represented by Lou Martelli), and Lincoln Electric (represented by Bob Sommer). With the judging nearly completed, Bob Sommer announced that an alternate first prize was available. Earlier in the morning he had been able to obtain a free week-long trip to Lincoln Electric’s manufacturing facilities and school in Cleveland, OH for the contest winner, if so desired. Naturally, DeGiralamo did not hesitate in accepting the offer. Sommer indicated that he was still working on including the expenses in the tour as well. Wigglesworth was not unhappy with DeGeralamo’s decision, as he was able to walk away with the original first place award in the form of a Lincoln 140C/180C MIG machine! Our thanks to both Lincoln and Diamond for their kind support and generosity. To recognize the accomplishments of all, no contestant went home without a generous prize.
The very capable judges had their hands full! They were:
Jim Korchowsky (Sunoco and AWS Philadelphia Past Chairman & current board member)
Pat Thomashefsky (Quality Management Company, Inc. and AWS Philadelphia Past Chairperson)
Tom Brown (Iron Workers LU-399)
