STUDENT NIGHT

Twenty-one students representing 8 schools from South Jersey participated in the annual Section student welding contest. Our section has set aside this night to honor these participants as well as the seniors and to invite our members and friends to share their experiences within the welding industry.

NATIONAL ACTIVITIES:

National Staff Representative, Certification, Terry Perez presented new pamphlets available from National and distributed several of the new pamphlets. “AWS WELDER MEMBERSHIP, EXCLUSIVELY FOR WELDERS”. A folder with various pamphlets’ sealed and ready for distribution is also available from National. As well as the pamphlet “POST JOBS/ FIND JOBS was distributed to the members. Terry reported the percentages of welders in over all numbers falls short of the goals of the AWS. Also that national is stepping up efforts in the recruitment of welders. Local sections are being asked to promote WWW.AWSJOBFIND.COM
District Director Ken Stockton continued the National Activities as presented in the District 2 Director Report.

DISTRICT BUSINESS:
Election of New District Director.

Welders as Member Campaign


The total number of welders that have joined the AWS is 4,271 to date

Leadership Symposium is scheduled for July 12-15, 09 at AWS headquarters

Instructors Institute is scheduled for July 28- August 1, 09 at AWS headquarters

Executive Directors Report

The society has a reserve fund of $18,711,200

AWS WeldMex was a success; there was 25,000 square feet of exhibit space. Approximately 90 exhibitors

The AWS Journal was translated into Spanish. For the WeldMex Show
AWS staff has sold 25,400 square feet

At the Chicago Show the staff has budgeted for 190, 00 square feet of exhibit space. The AWS staff has sold all most 147,000 square feet

Beginning this year the Vise President’s will be assigned to cover District Conferences

The staff numbers are 102 employees

Metallurgy of Welding and Joining (13-Lesson Series)

Welding metallurgy is a complex subject because it requires knowledge of materials, welding processes, design, and inspection. Metallurgy of Welding and Joining provides an excellent review of welding processes, welding of materials ranging from carbon steel to specialized alloys, guidelines for designing weldments to facilitate welding, and testing and inspecting welds to meet performance requirements. To measure your retention of each lesson’s materials and end-of -lesson test will be provided, in addition to an end of course examination.

Class will be held at SPS Technologies weekly for 2.5-3 hrs the course comes with books and there are weekly test as well as a final. They are very challenging. 

The MEI course will begin in November and again be at SPS Technologies, probably on Tuesdays the same as before. No more exact details are available at this time. It will be promoted as a joint venture with the local chapters/sections of ASMI, ASNT & AWS.
